I bought this bracelet in Accra, Ghana at a crafts market while on a trip with 15 other African-Americans visiting the continent for the first time. This bracelet, made of brass, cost a mere $5 but its value is incalculable to me. It represents not only my identity, but also the identity of hundreds of millions scattered throughout the African Diaspora. Sankofa is an Adinkra symbol meaning “Go back and get it.“ It’s symbolized by a bird flying forward while looking backwards while holding the egg of knowledge in its mouth. I, along with 15 others journeyed to learn more about our origins hoping the journey would provide us with knowledge and insights to carry back home with us. I honor this trip and experience by wearing this everyday and I have for almost 13 years.
